This is a great reminder and some good photos to go along with it.🚨 We have seen TWO RED BAGS in the past 4 days!! It is time for our annual foaling post about RED BAG DELIVERIES! We share this post every year as we are determined to educate as many as possible and save foals! ![]()
We are in the midst of foaling season and we want to remind you of what is normal and abnormal. The placenta is made up of two major parts: the red bag (chorioallantois) and the white bag (amnion). The red bag attaches to the uterine wall, which allows the exchange of nutrients and oxygen to the fetus. ![]()
In a normal delivery the amnion is visible and characterized by a white appearance. A red bag delivery is characterized by a red velvety appearance. 🚨 A red bag delivery is considered an EMERGENCY as it signifies premature separation of the placenta leading to a lack of oxygen to the fetus. ‼️YOU NEED TO INTERVENE IMMEDIATELY ‼️ The red placental membrane should be opened carefully to release fluid, the foal should be delivered/pulled with your assistance and then stimulated to breathe. Foals may develop problems associated with lack of oxygen even though they appear normal at birth. ![]()
⭐️ If your mare is having OR HAD a red bag delivery, please call Pine Ridge Equine Hospital 918-827-8000 ASAP or your regular veterinarian! ![]()

I just wanted to let you all know that Prascend rebates end Nov 30th this year. If they resume again next year it likely won’t be until spring so you may want to stock up a little.

We re-scoped Spencer a few days ago since he had completed his 28day Gastrogard treatment. His non glandular ulcers were healed up very nicely. But, we did find he has some glandular ulceration that is still bothering him. There are some before and after photos of the “white/yellow” part of his stomach for comparison. The entrance to the duodenum has a funky red patch and is swollen and he is still not eating his grain well so that needs to be treated. That’s one of the benefits of scoping, you can see exactly where ulcers are and know what medication would help them the most.
